  • Free mental health e-learning for Healthy Workplace Month

    Contributed by FSM Staff

NORTH BAY, ON -- Workplace Safety North (WSN) has launched five new e-learning courses focused on mental health and psychological health and safety in the workplace. To recognize Healthy Workplace Month this October, the courses are available at no cost until December 31, 2026.

These courses provide practical information and strategies to help workplaces build resilience, increase mental health awareness, support colleagues and reduce stigma.

The new self-paced e-learning courses include:

Resilience at Work: Building Strength and Confidence in Resource Industries

Mental Health Awareness and Peer Support in the Workplace

Stamping out Stigma: Addressing Mental Health in the Workplace

Supporting Young Workers’ Mental Health: Strategies for Supervisors and Leaders

Leadership’s Role in Mental Health – coming soon

Each course takes approximately one hour to complete and is designed for workers, supervisors, managers, joint health and safety committee members, health and safety representatives, and others interested in psychological health and safety at work.

“Mental health is an important part of overall workplace health and safety,” says Tiana Larocque, Manager of Integrated Solutions, Health and Safety Services at WSN. “Healthy Workplace Month is an opportunity to focus on the steps workplaces can take to support employee well-being, and we’re pleased to make these new courses available at no cost until the end of the year.”

An overview of each course is highlighted below.
Resilience at Work: Building Strength and Confidence in Resource Industries
Resilience at Work: Building Strength and Confidence in Resource Industries explores what resilience means, why it matters and how it can be strengthened.
Participants learn strategies for managing stress, building confidence and supporting a positive work environment. The course also introduces the “prune principle,” an approach to building confidence and supporting personal growth.

Mental Health Awareness and Peer Support in the Workplace
Mental Health Awareness and Peer Support in the Workplace helps participants better understand mental health and how they can support themselves and others at work. The course explores mental health, harm and illness, and introduces the mental health continuum as a tool for recognizing changes in mental health. Participants also learn practical approaches to supportive conversations with colleagues, including compassion and connecting people with appropriate resources.

Stamping out Stigma: Addressing Mental Health in the Workplace
Stamping out Stigma: Addressing Mental Health in the Workplace focuses on recognizing and reducing stigma related to mental health. Participants learn about different forms of stigma, how stigma can appear in language and media, and its potential impact. The course also provides strategies for helping create a more respectful and supportive workplace.

Supporting Young Workers’ Mental Health: Strategies for Supervisors and Leaders
Supporting Young Workers’ Mental Health: Strategies for Supervisors and Leadersprovides details on this select population that faces unique challenges as they enter the workforce for the first time. In this course, learners come to know about skills to recognize these challenges, communicate effectively, and build a culture of support.

    Leadership’s Role in Mental Health
Leadership’s Role in Mental Health is designed as a guide for all workplace leaders – from supervisors to joint health and safety committee members, among others – to broaden their understanding of psychologically safe workplaces. Learners come to know more about factors affecting workplace mental health and how to support worker wellbeing.

These courses join existing mental health training and resources, including Opening the Door to Mental Health Support and Occupational Mental Health, which became available earlier this year.

Learners are encouraged to take the one-day Workplace Mental Health: A Framework for Leaders course, available through in-person sessions scheduled across Ontario throughout the year.
