QUINCY, MA -- Chief Michael Young has been elected chair of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire and Emergency Services member section. Individuals sought for this two-year position are leaders in their respective industries and have demonstrated an established track record of expertise, knowledge, and integrity among their peers.

Chief Young’s career in public safety began 36 years ago as a call firefighter and EMT/Paramedic, then as a career firefighter with the Plymouth Fire Department for 33 years. During his tenure with the department, he climbed the ranks of lieutenant, captain, and battalion chief to deputy fire chief, where he was in charge of operations, overseeing more than 120 uniformed members from seven fire stations, six civilian employees, and two employees of the Emergency Management Division; the department responded to more than 7,300 emergency incidents each year. In addition to Chief Young’s fire suppression and fire investigation duties, he was the department’s public fire and life safety education program coordinator.

After retiring from the Plymouth Fire Department, Chief Young served as the New England regional manager with the National Fire Sprinkler Association.

Chief Young is currently an adjunct faculty member of the fire science degree program at Cape Cod Community College, where he teaches building construction for the fire service and serves on the fire science program advisory board.

During his career, Chief Young has worked at the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Fire Data and Public Education Unit, as a statewide coordinator for the S.A.F.E. (Student Awareness of Fire Education) Program. In addition, he was a member of the FM-Global Fire Service Advisory Committee and the NFPA Northeast Regional Fire Code Development Committee. He also served on the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts (FPAM) Board of Directors and was PARADE Region 1 Co-Chair representing the International Fire Marshal’s Association.

Individuals are elected to serve as the chair of an NFPA member section by NFPA section members at large. All nominees are required to participate in an interview process conducted by the NFPA Member Section Executive Board, or in some cases the nominating committee, which takes place over a two-month period.
