FALLS CHURCH, VA -- AIHA announced the virtual premiere of this year’s Mark of Excellence ceremony, celebrating the recipients of the 2020 AIHA Named Awards, will be held on November 5-6, 2020.
The Mark of Excellence ceremony honors individuals who have significantly contributed to the industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety professions.
AIHA President Lindsay Cook, CIH, characterized the honorees as having “demonstrated unparalleled devotion to keeping our workplaces and communities healthy and safe.” He added, “AIHA is proud to recognize our award recipients for their tireless efforts.”
The recipients were chosen by AIHA’s Awards and Fellows Nominating Committee, which is chaired by the AIHA past president and is also comprised of the past-past president and four other individuals selected from the general membership. The committee represents academia, government, industry, and consulting and includes members at all career stages, four AIHA fellows, and active volunteer group or local section participants. The AIHA CEO and president also participate in the committee’s final discussions to ensure objectivity and fairness.
The 2020 AIHA Named Awards and their recipients are as follows:
The Alice Hamilton Award will go to L. Faye Grimsley, PhD, CIH, FAIHA, who was nominated by Kerry-Ann Jaggassar, CIH. This award is presented to an outstanding woman who has been engaged in industrial hygiene and occupational health for at least 10 years, and who is dedicated to public and community service, social reform, and technological innovation.
The Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award will go to Harry J. Beaulieu, PhD, CIH, CSP, FAIHA, who was nominated by Michael Amster, PE, CIH, CSP, CHMM, FAIHA. This award is bestowed on an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the knowledge and practice of the profession of industrial hygiene, and who has been recognized for contributions outside the field, such as in environmental health and safety, occupational health, public health, or business.
The Distinguished Service to AIHA Award will go to Carter B. Ficklen III, CIH, CSP, who was nominated by Jennifer Sahmel, MPH, CIH, CSP, FAIHA; Cathy Hovde, CIH, CSP; Megan Canright, MPH, CIH; and Shannon H. Gaffney, PhD, MHS, CIH. This award is presented to an individual who has advanced industrial hygiene through unique technical contributions to the aims and goals of AIHA, proven leadership in the IH profession, and proven influence on public policy or social reform, or public and community service.
The Edward J. Baier Technical Achievement Award will go to M. Andrew Maier, Ph.D., CIH, DABT, FAIHA, who was nominated by Jeanne Fallon-Carine, CIH. This award is given to an individual, group, or group of individuals, company, academic institution, organization, or association that has made significant contributions to industrial hygiene in recent years through technical expertise, innovations, or scientific advancements.
The Henry F. Smyth Jr. Award will go to Frank Renshaw, PhD, CIH, CSP, FAIHA who was nominated by Barbara J. Dawson, CIH, CSP, FAIHA. This award recognizes individuals who have made substantial, evidence-based solutions and contributions to the needs of the industrial hygiene profession, thereby significantly impacting and improving public welfare.
The Kusnetz Award will go to Dana M. Hollins, CIH, who was nominated by Jennifer Sahmel, MPH, CIH, CSP, FAIHA; Megan Canright, MPH, CIH; John Henshaw, CIH, FAIHA; and Shannon H. Gaffney, PhD, MHS, CIH. This award honors an industrial hygienist under the age of 40 and currently employed in the private sector who shows promise for leadership in the profession. The Kusnetz Award is sponsored by Mrs. Florence Kusnetz.
The Social Responsibility Award will go to the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), which was nominated by Scott P. Schneider, CIH, FAIHA. This award is presented to an individual, group, or entity that works within larger organizations to develop and promote practical, socially responsible solutions to issues related to industrial hygiene or environmental health and safety.
The Yant Award will go to Steven Verpaele, who was nominated by Maryanne Levitsky, MES, CIH, ROH, FAIHA and Jennifer Galvin, PhD, CIH. This award is presented annually to an individual residing outside of the United States to recognize outstanding contributions in industrial hygiene or allied fields. The Yant Award is sponsored by the Mine Safety Appliances Company.
Following the November 5-6 virtual premiere, the awards ceremony will be available to watch on AIHA Network TV.
