NSC Announces 2017 Green Cross for Safety Award Finalists

ITASCA, IL -- The National Safety Council announced the finalists for the 2017 Green Cross for Safety awards, given annually to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated safety excellence in workplaces, in homes and communities and on the road.

"Our Green Cross for Safety award finalists provide blueprints for any person or organization focused on saving lives,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "They recognize that safety is a journey and constantly ask, 'What more can we do?' We look forward to recognizing their accomplishments."

Finalists for the 2017 Green Cross for Safety awards are:
Excellence in Safety – presented to a corporation, coalition or organization that has created life-saving and injury-preventing safety solutions:
• The Boeing Company – Boeing Fabrication – for streamlining safety processes and procedures across business units to encourage timely incident resolution and more frequent near-miss reporting;
• Chatham County Government (GA) – for creating the Chatham County Occupational Safety and Risk Management Department which in the first two years of existence reduced rear-end collisions by 75 percent;
• PotashCorp – for implementing safety processes and a safety culture that incorporates training and evaluation of routine tasks, and empowers employees to report potential issues to reduce serious injuries and fatalities.

Safety Innovation – presented to a corporation, coalition, individual or organization that has taken an innovative approach to solving a long-held safety challenge:
• The Boeing Company – Piranha Lox True Interlock Harness – for developing a fall protection system that disables a work platform if a worker is not properly using his or her Personal Protective Equipment;
• The Boeing Company – 777X Design-In Safety and Environment Program – for integrating worker safety and environmental requirements into facilities, tooling, equipment and airplane design early in the product development process, with a focus on proactive intervention;
• Odebrecht Construction, Inc. – for addressing road construction injury rates by implementing a multi-level approach to worker visibility and danger alerts that has reduced work zone intrusions by 52 percent.


Safety Advocate – presented to an individual who has made a significant personal impact on a safety issue to raise awareness and prevent injuries and deaths:
• Tracey Holmberg, Swedish Medical Center, Denver, CO – for piloting the “Just Drive” distracted driving program that gained statewide traction and engaged both the general public and employers;
• Louis Jogmen, Park Ridge Police Department, Park Ridge, IL – for spearheading the inaugural Illinois Rail Safety Week to promote public awareness through education, enforcement and rail safety engineering advances;
• Trenda McPherson, Tampa, FL – for leading the Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition which helped drive down fatalities by 30 percent.
